AXION Structural Innovations’s ECOTRAX® Composite Railroad Ties are of the highest quality, made using our patented formula – an industrial grade, Recycled Structural Composite (RSC). ECOTRAX® ties currently meet and exceed all AREMA standards. They resist plate wear, hold spikes, and maintain gauge – even after more than ten years at the TTCI HTL test track, accumulating over 1,500 MGT of 39-ton axle loads.

Starting with tight controls in place for both our raw materials and our patented blends, AXION is able to consistently manufacture our ties within an established range of tolerance. By constantly monitoring our results, AXION can more readily identify opportunities to improve on our already outstanding design and manufacturing. For example, our patented pattern – debossed upon the sides and bottom of each ECOTRAX® Composite Railroad Tie – allows for optimal hold and increased mechanical interlock between tie and ballast. By fine-tuning and improving our design and manufacturing processes, we have developed a pattern that is both debossed and slightly embossed – on the same tie. Small improvement – better product.

QUALITY MANUFACTURING
During manufacturing, AXION controls multiple variables for quality including: manifold temperature, pressure, flow-rate, and pack-times during the extrusion process. Our ties are also 100% inspected visually for anomalies that impact fit, form, or function. Aesthetic applications are also evaluated and random sample selection is performed for lot acceptance testing (LAT), in accordance with ANSI Z1.4-2003.

QUALITY INSPECTION
Quality control continues during and after cooling, when our ties are sent through X-Ray and weighing, then checked for any critical voids. Dimensional and mechanical tests – including length, width, height, end perpendicularity, and straightness – are performed on all LAT samples. All LAT samples are tested for Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) equivalencies. MOR (min) tests are performed to 3000 psig and one LAT sample per shift is destructively tested to acquire MOR (max) values.
